Burn and Dodge Photography, of Louisville, Kentucky, is a children's black and white photography studio. It is the collaboration of a husband and wife team and their clients. They believe that black and white has a timeless quality and offers an artistic perspective of your loved ones. The following is a brief history of Burn and Dodge Photography.

There are two sides to every coin … for every right there is a wrong … where there is darkness let there be light …

Betsy Porter Wurth
The Photographer:
Born in Louisville, Kentucky.

Background:
For most of her life, Betsy has had a passionate interest in photography. This interest was sparked in sixth grade when her family bought a brand new camera to take on their vacation to Florida … a Canon something or other? Thank goodness they were patient and open to letting her experiment with it – because it started a lifelong journey.

She has come quite a distance since that family vacation 20 years ago. Her high school did not offer courses in photography, so she took adult education classes at night to learn the trade. Through an art scholarship, she attended Murray State University, where she earned a BA in Fine Arts with an area in Photography. By her senior year she was the assistant photography teacher, had won several awards, had 3 solo photo exhibits and was published (by the age of 19). Her interests in people and travel have led her on excursions throughout Europe, stopping for a summer in Austria to take a class in photography.

In the nineties, she worked for a couple years in a “professional” studio, but found the hurried atmosphere too impersonal and the traditional poses too mass-produced to be artistic. Betsy wants the photo session to be a memorable experience that the client can participate in, so she aims to create a laid back, fun environment where there is no rush to get you in and out and your suggestions are always welcome.

Betsy’s photo style is honest and candid … a “you get what you see” approach. Her love of what she does is apparent in her work as well as in the creation of it (the photo session). She feels like the success of an image is not in the originality of the artist or in the use of props, but in the unique expression of each subject. They are the true works of art.

Ambitions:
Successfully maintaining a photo business while raising a daughter, and eventually, owning a black and white photo gallery to showcase and offer support for up and coming local fine art photographers.

Likes:
Thunderstorms, chocolate milk, a child’s laugh, gerbera daisies and Alfred Hitchcock movies.

John Wurth
Technical End, Web Manager, Grip … AKA “The Rest”
Born in Paducah, Kentucky.

Background:
John has been cultivating his expertise in computers since the ripe old age of 10, when his dad came home with an IBM PC Jr. He soon moved on up to the Osicom (for you fellow computer nerds, that’s an 8088 processor with a whopping 10 MB hard drive). After 23 years of sincere devotion to the PC he made the switch to an Apple Macintosh Performa 6400, and never went back.

This self-taught computer nerd went to college thinking he needed to get a “degree” in something to make a living. It didn’t take long for him to realize the wealth of knowledge he had attained thru the years was enough to land him a top seat under Mr. Jobs himself (Apple’s CEO). But his ambitions were not quite that high … so after studying photography for several years at PCC and Murray State University, he moved to Louisville to pursue a life filled with web-design/technical consulting/graphic design/photography… and in 1999, John joined forces with Betsy to form this photography business.

John’s technical know-how mixed with his retro sense of style has afforded him many a website to his credit, including the one you are now viewing.

Likes:
Computer Magazines, The Simpson’s, chunky peanut butter, the latest technical gear and a snowy day
